Most Rev. Nereo P. Odchimar, DD, JCD, MBA

Bishop Nereo P. Odchimar was born on Oct. 16, 1940 in Bacuag, Surigao del Norte.

He was ordained a priest on Dec. 19, 1964, and was appointed Bishop of Tandag (Surigao Del Sur) on Oct. 18, 2001.

He is also the current president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines.

He is visiting Houston before attending an official function in Dallas and he will be celebrating three Thanksgiving Masses. Everyone is invited come.

Salubong is a very unique Filipino Easter tradition. It celebrates the first meeting of our Resurrected Christ with His beloved Mother. Can you just imagine the exuberant joy of our Blessed Mary on that Easter day? After the grief and sorrow, Jesus appears to her alive and victorious. What a glorious sight that must have been!

In this Sunday’s Gospel reading, we encounter the Transfiguration of Christ according to Luke. His transfiguration reminds us that before Jesus achieves glory that He must pass through great hardship. One can just imagine the conversation He had with Moses and Elijah as they spoke of what is to come “…that He was going to accomplish in Jerusalem”. With these simple words, Jesus’ accomplishment was to sacrifice His very life so that we might be given a chance to share in His glory.

Last Sunday we admired the pre-adolescent Jesus as the youngest “teacher of Israel,” shining among the renowned teachers in the Temple. Today we see him as the fulfillment of God’s promises as recorded in the Holy Book. The content of God’s Word offers us guidance and encouragement today, no less than it did in the history of the people of Israel.

It’s vital message is ever relevant. Let us open our hearts to receive God’s Word and make it the guiding light of our lives.

Grace and Peace to you and your loved ones.

Once again we are preparing ourselves for Christmas. I hope that this season of Advent may give you the opportunity to reflect on the coming of Jesus through the mystery of the Incarnation. God in His goodness and love for us sent His Son to become one like us except sin. This becoming True Man of the Son of God shows us God’s unfathomable love for us. Jesus became one of us with all our limitations and weaknesses as human persons to save us from our sins and make us sharers in the life of God.

“For you know the gracious act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that for your sake he became poor although he was rich, so that by his poverty you might become rich.” _{(2 Cor 8:9)}

The mystery of Christmas goes beyond the merry makings and gifts giving. It goes beyond the joys and happy feelings that accompany the season of Christmas. Christmas should make us pause to consider that God entered our human history so that we could partake in the life and love of God – more concretely, to be children of God! Christmas should find us in the loving arms of God our Father!

Here is the schedule of our Simbang Gabi celebrations in the parishes and archdiocese. I am thankful to the many Filipino leaders of the parishes and the Filipino Ministry Council for again spearheading the Simbang Gabi celebrations. This beautiful Filipino religious tradition must continue and grow in our Filipino families and parishes. Our children must be taught to participate and appreciate the Simbang Gabi. Our parishes must also be introduced to this prayerful preparation for Christmas. More than ever, we the Filipinos must be a leaven to keep Christ in Christmas.

Notre Dame recently dedicated its new Church. We congratulate the parishioners and most especially Msgr. Roland Diokno for the new place of worship. We wish to thank the parish community for hosting our monthly Misang Pilipino.

Unang Linggo ng Adbiyento (Taong K)

How wonderful will it be when Jesus comes and appears for the second time…however, the Gospel reading warns us of the tribulations that will occur first. It only takes reading the papers to see the chaos that is all around us. Jesus had forewarned us about these “signs”, not in order to scare us but to warn us so that we should be vigilant and stand our ground when these tribulations occur. We are asked to be faithful, prayerful and in total availability to welcome Him even in the most unlikely or unexpected persons and events.

This Sunday is the First Sunday of Advent. A new liturgical season, a new opportunity to be aware for need of salvation that only Jesus Christ can provide.

Ika-30 Linggo sa Karaniwang Panahon (Taon B)

In this Sunday’s Gospel, the blind man Bartimaeus, boldly and persistently pursued Jesus. When Jesus asked him what he wanted, he said “Master, I want to see.”

Without any fanfare, Jesus replied “Go forth, your faith has saved you.” What great faith Bartimaeus had!

Faith is a grace from God, a gift which allows us to see beyond the possible and the physical. Yet, God never forces it upon us. It is a human action, one which requires human choice. The beauty of it is, when we choose faith, we become partners of the Divine for our very own salvation.

San Lorenzo Ruiz is the first Filipino Saint and martyr. He was a layman, married, and had 3 children. He was born circa 1600 in Binondo, Manila, and he was educated in Dominican schools. In his younger years, San Lorenzo served at the convent of Binondo church as a sacristan. Not only did he learn Spanish there but also catechism. After several years, San Lorenzo Ruiz earned the title of "escribano" or notary. He became an active member of the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary, an organization devoted to the Blessed Virgin.

In 1636, he was falsely accused of murder and sought asylum on board a ship with three Dominican priests, Saint Antonio Gonzalez, Saint Guillermo Courtet, and Saint Miguel de Aozaraza, a Japanese priest, Saint Vicente Shiwozuka de la Cruz, and a layman named Saint Lazaro of Kyoto, a leper. The boat landed at Okinawa and the group was arrested on basis of their Christian religion.

At that time, there was a wide scale persecution of Christians. All those who professed faith in God and served as missionaries were jailed and even put to death. Their lives were to be spared if they would renounce their Christians faith. But thousands of those Christians chose death rather than renouncing their belief in God. And San Lorenzo Ruiz was among those who underwent excruciating forms of persecution. On September 27, 1637, he was hung upside down from the gallows with his body falling into a pit. After two days of agony, he died of bleeding and suffocation. His body along with other martyrs were set on fire and the ashes carried out of the Nagasaki Bay and thrown into the sea near the little island of Io-Juma, to prevent their veneration by the Christians.

When the San Lorenzo was being interrogated and asked whether to grant him life if he renounced his faith, he replied with these noble words: "I am a Christian, and this I profess until the hour of my death and for God I shall give my life…and had I many thousands of lives, I shall offer them for Him. And so, do with me as you please."

San Lorenzo Ruiz was proclaimed "Blessed" in February 1981 at Luneta, together with 16 other companions, in connection with Pope John Paul II's papal visit to the Philippines. He was canonized and declared a "Saint" on October 18, 1987 in Rome.

Their feast day is September 28.

Most Rev. Romulo T. De la Cruz, D.D.

In 2008, he was recently installed as the 5th bishop of Kidapawan, the same place where he was ordained as priest 36 years ago.

He spent ten years as a seminary formator at Notre Dame Seminary in Cotabato City where all Cotabato and Kidapawan seminarians at that time had their seminary college studies. He was the parish priest of Tacurong for three years. His previous assignments as Bishop include the Diocese of San Jose de Antique and Prelature of Isabela de Basilan

Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes

In this Sunday's Gospel, we are reminded of the multiplication of five barley loaves and two fishes which fed five thousand hungry people while leaving twelve baskets leftover. Impossible as it may seem, in the unity of the Spirit, it was achieved. For, when the Lord God is pleased with His children, nothing is impossible.

Our Lord wants nothing but to be united with us. Being united with Him, we gain personal spiritual growth and ultimately the growth of the Body of Christ. This week, let us reflect on the Word of God, and ask ourselves if we are obeying Christ to be united in His Spirit.

The Fifth Sunday of Lent - Mar 29, 2009

"Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit."

This Sunday readings shows us the basic truth that our salvation is the fruit of the death of our Lord, Jesus Christ. It was through His death that the new covenant was sealed. If we want the life of grace to grow within us, we must be prepared to die to our lower selves that we can start living unto the Lord. Then we become active partners of the new covenant.

The First Sunday of Lent - Feb 28, 2009

This week’s gospel reminds us about Jesus’ journey that was to lead to Easter. Jesus prepared himself by withdrawing to the desert and confronting the temptation to avoid the great task that lay ahead of him.

Have we taken seriously the fact that, in sharing our human experience, Jesus knew the weight of human decisions and the temptations involved – though, of course, he was without sin in the response he made? This testing brought Jesus new strength, and he began to proclaim the Good News of the coming reign of God. In his company, during the coming days, let us recognize the nature of our temptations, and the bonds of selfishness from which we want to be freed as we make our journey to Easter.

San Lorenzo Ruiz is the first Filipino Saint and martyr. He was a layman, married, and had 3 children. He was born circa 1600 in Binondo, Manila, and he was educated in Dominican schools. In his younger years, San Lorenzo served at the convent of Binondo church as a sacristan. Not only did he learn Spanish there but also catechism. After several years, San Lorenzo Ruiz earned the title of "escribano" or notary. He became an active member of the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary, an organization devoted to the Blessed Virgin.

In 1636, he was falsely accused of murder and sought asylum on board a ship with three Dominican priests, Saint Antonio Gonzalez, Saint Guillermo Courtet, and Saint Miguel de Aozaraza, a Japanese priest, Saint Vicente Shiwozuka de la Cruz, and a layman named Saint Lazaro of Kyoto, a leper. The boat landed at Okinawa and the group was arrested on basis of their Christian religion.

At that time, there was a wide scale persecution of Christians. All those who professed faith in God and served as missionaries were jailed and even put to death. Their lives were to be spared if they would renounce their Christians faith. But thousands of those Christians chose death rather than renouncing their belief in God. And San Lorenzo Ruiz was among those who underwent excruciating forms of persecution. On September 27, 1637, he was hung upside down from the gallows with his body falling into a pit. After two days of agony, he died of bleeding and suffocation. His body along with other martyrs were set on fire and the ashes carried out of the Nagasaki Bay and thrown into the sea near the little island of Io-Juma, to prevent their veneration by the Christians.

When the San Lorenzo was being interrogated and asked whether to grant him life if he renounced his faith, he replied with these noble words: "I am a Christian, and this I profess until the hour of my death and for God I shall give my life…and had I many thousands of lives, I shall offer them for Him. And so, do with me as you please."

San Lorenzo Ruiz was proclaimed "Blessed" in February 1981 at Luneta, together with 16 other companions, in connection with Pope John Paul II's papal visit to the Philippines. He was canonized and declared a "Saint" on October 18, 1987 in Rome.

Their feast day is September 28.

St. Diego Aloysius de san Vitores & Blessed Pedro Calungsod

Today is the Feast day of both St. Diego Vitores and Bl. Pedro Calungsod. San Diego was a Jesuit priest who was initially assigned to the missions to the Philippines. He later asked to lead a mission in the Marianas Islands (Guam) where they evangelized and established several churches. Along with Spanish priests, San Diego brought with him several teenage boys from the Philippines. They were catechists, sacristans, bearers of mass-kits and provision-bags on mission journeys, often serving without pay. These young men were very loyal and obedient to the missionary Fathers. Among them was Blessed Pedro Calungsod. He came from the Visayas Islands and started serving the Jesuit priests at an early age of 14 and was only 18 when he was martyred.

According to accounts, Blessed Calungsod died while trying to protect San Diego from their assassins, however, both suffered the same fate under the spear and axe.
